Royal Hawaiian Golf Club: Jurassic Park Golf Just Minutes from Waikiki
Looking for one of the most unique golf experiences on Oahu?
Play Royal Hawaiian Golf Club.
Imagine playing golf in Jurassic Park — just without the dinosaurs.
That is probably the easiest way to describe Royal Hawaiian Golf Club.
Located beneath the dramatic Ko'olau Mountains on Oahu's windward side, Royal Hawaiian is surrounded by towering green mountains, tropical rainforest and some of the most spectacular scenery you'll find on any golf course in Hawaii.
And it's only about 35 minutes from Waikiki, depending on traffic.
If you're visiting Honolulu and looking for a golf course that actually feels like Hawaii, Royal Hawaiian should be on your list.
Golf in Hawaii's Version of Jurassic Park
There are plenty of beautiful golf courses in Hawaii.
Royal Hawaiian is different.
The course sits at the base of the Ko'olau Mountain Range near massive Mt. Olomana. Huge green mountains rise almost vertically around portions of the course, while fairways wind through dense tropical vegetation.
It feels secluded, tropical and almost prehistoric.
That's why we like to describe Royal Hawaiian as:
Jurassic Park golf — without the dinosaurs.
It's one of those courses where you'll probably take almost as many pictures as golf shots.
A Completely Different Side of Oahu
If you're staying in Waikiki, most of your vacation is probably centered around beaches, hotels, restaurants and the city.
Royal Hawaiian gives you something completely different.
Drive away from Waikiki and approximately 35 minutes later you can be standing beneath the Ko'olau Mountains surrounded by tropical rainforest.
It's hard to believe you're still on the same island.
This is one of the reasons we recommend Royal Hawaiian to visitors who want more than simply another round of golf.
It's a Hawaii experience.
About Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
Formerly known as Luana Hills Golf Course, Royal Hawaiian was designed by Pete and Perry Dye.
The course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout measuring approximately 6,600 yards from the back tees.
Don't let the yardage fool you.
Royal Hawaiian isn't about simply hitting driver as far as possible. The layout rewards accuracy, course management and choosing the right position from which to attack the greens.
The course moves through natural terrain with elevation changes, water, jungle and dramatic mountain backdrops.
The result is one of the most visually memorable rounds on Oahu.
The Famous Par-3 12th Hole
One of Royal Hawaiian's signature holes is the par-3 12th.
Standing on the tee, you're surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and the massive Ko'olau Mountains.
It's one of those holes that immediately reminds you that you're playing golf in Hawaii.
Take the picture.
Then worry about making par.
Royal Hawaiian Isn't Your Typical Resort Golf Course
If you're expecting wide-open resort fairways with ocean views on every hole, Royal Hawaiian isn't that golf course.
And that's exactly why you should consider playing it.
Royal Hawaiian offers mountains, jungle, dramatic elevation and tropical scenery.
It gives golfers something completely different from the courses on Oahu's drier west side.
If you're planning several rounds during your Hawaii vacation, mixing Royal Hawaiian into your itinerary gives you an entirely different style of golf.
